Since its opening in 2011 Anselma has became a synonym for a progressively alternative urban culture, an open space that welcomes people and ideas from all backgrounds and in a variety of genres. Colourful, soft and sometimes shiney, but most of all a homely shelter for both outcasts and businessmen. Joke aside, it is a collaborative and co-working place that connects creatives and enthusiasts, who might not apply to current trends, yet remain highly professional and ethical. In 2020 Anselma received the Sustainability WOW award at the Ljubljana Fashion Week.

Since its opening in 2011, Anselma has become a synonym for a progressively alternative urban culture, an open space that welcomes people and ideas from all backgrounds and in a variety of genres. Anselma is a collaborative and co-working place that connects creatives and enthusiasts, who might not apply to current trends, yet remain highly professional and ethical. In 2020, Anselma received the Sustainability WOW Award at the Ljubljana Fashion Week.

Anselma started in an old apartment in the city centre mainly as a place for sewing workshops and personal ateliers, hosting various gatherings, exhibitions, concerts and other events. Now, it resides next to the well-known Stari Tišler, a restaurant offering traditional Slovene food for over a century, near the main train station. The space is approachable directly from the street, inviting by-passers and, in return, bringing life to the neighbourhood. Anselma, a shop and a brand, has since spread the word and a collection of its own, sustainable line of clothes called Made in Anselma.

A production space, an atelier, and a shop

The space is at once: a production space with sewing machines, available for everyone for a daily, weekly or monthly pass (Sewing Fitness); an atelier, filled with creations, where imagination meets the retro lines, variations of patterns play with colours, a vintage selection of fabrics reach out to extraordinary heights; and a shop. But most importantly, Anselma is a place where the materials are high quality, selected from the so-called dead stock from other projects and individuals. Stitches and patterns are made cautiously and locally. It's a place where creators strive to lower their environmental impact, offer you sincere advice and receive a fair price for their work.

If you decide to share a worktable, you will also gain valuable resources – quite a few young fashion or product designers started their individual path with Anselma's support.

In winter, a traditional sale is set for an entire day around Christmas, presenting the atelier's residents and giving a place for other designers who want to present and sell their work.

People and brands

The owner and person behind Anselma is Ana Malalan Čeligoj, an architect by profession, fashion designer, author of the handbook Supertailoring/Superkrojenje, published by Mladinska knjiga Publishing House. She also worked at Made in Anselma presenting this cosy, timeless, ethical, sustainable and ecological brand.

Fashion designer Tanja Pađan is an art-director, alongside co-creating the Anselma programme and line, she operates under her unique brand of clothes Kiss The Future that was also rewarded at the Ljubljana Fashion Week (LFW) in 2020.

Tomaž Šantl is an audio-visual director, photographer and video maker with strong references in both freelance and artistic, street and commercial projects and clients. He presents the products in a way that catches your eye.

Among previous residents are Jona Bedjanec (winner of the Digi Wow Award at the LFW 2019), Martina Obid Mlakar with MOM Jewellery, Nataša Kovač with the bags and wallets brand Vandalimorale.

Courses and events

A vast selection of courses and workshops are available at Anselma, both by in-house programme and production, also hosting designers and artisans like Anja Slapničar with a ceramics workshop, Tjaša Križnar (Pirate Piška) making backpacks, etc.

Short, few-hours-long workshops will equip you with knowledge and a new piece of clothing, be it a sweater, leggings or – with an extra session – a raincoat.

Technical courses introduce you to machines or fabrics, and for both sets of knowledge, Anselma is the best place to learn. The sewing machines are mostly the robust ones, made in Yugoslavia; fabrics can also date back to older times, the remnants of other projects or productions as well as from the relatives of Anselma creators – a so-called legacy of grandmothers, from where the name of the space also comes.

Supercourse, the first and most well-known programme of Anselma, is an in-depth course for tailoring and sewing. The course was formed even before the name and brand were born. It lasts for a few weeks, transforming enthusiasts into creators, building community as well.

In recent years, Supercourse was upgraded to ŠŠŠ/Šuper sewing school, a year-round gathering for sewing.
