The Research Centre for Humanities of the University of Nova Gorica, a successor of the former Institute for Cultural Studies, focuses on Language and Cognitive Science and Literary Studies. The latter consists of the four research areas: the overlooked women writers, literature in the borderland between Slovenia and Italy, the ancient Greek and Roman motifs and their transformation in Slovene literature, and the relation between literature and new media art. The Language and Cognitive Science research engages in formal linguistics but also extends to neuro- and psycholinguistics. The Centre also conducts various applied research and expertise projects on demand.

Research focus in the past

The research projects include Syntax (mainly Slovenian), Morphology, Phonology (for example, (De)voicing across Slovenian Dialects) and Social and Structural Peculiarities of Slovene (Internet Language Consultancy, Slovene Company Names, Language Policy in General).

Past cultural researches included Construction of Memory in Central and South Eastern Europe (Changing Memory Landscape in South Eastern and Central Europe, Remembering the Yugoslav People's Army); History of Humanities (History of Historiography, History of Linguistics, Trends and Developments in the Research of the Language-Culture Interface at the End of 20th and Beginning of the 21st Century); and Language and Culture (Semiotics and Theory of Symbols: Language Ideologies and Social Processes in Central and South Eastern Europe, Construing an Image of Neighbourhood: Austria, Slovenia and Discourses on South Eastern Europe).

International cooperation

The Research Centre for Humanities participates in the European Cooperation in Science and Technology (COST) Women Writers in History project, thus contributing to the European literary history. Its Language and Cognitive Science research groups cooperate with the University of Ottawa, Harvard University, Stony Brook University, and numerous other tertiary-level institutions. In 2016 they concluded a European project with (HERA CRP) Travelling Texts 1790-1914: The Transnational Reception of Women’s Writing at the Fringes of Europe which was exploring women’s participation in transnational exchanges of literary texts from historical and geographical perspective, the role of women as authors, translators and cultural mediators. In 2017 they were also one of the organizers of a conference Teaching Women Writers: exploring NEWW VRE possibilities which took place in Ljubljana.
