Named in honour of Matija Murko (1861–1952), a Slovene ethnologist and researcher of literary and music forms, the Murko Award is bestowed annually by the Slovene Ethnological Society for scientific and professional achievements in the field of ethnology.

Established in 1986 the society has bestowed numerous awards: the Murko Special Mention (the first recipients being Vilko Novak and Niko Kuret in 1988); followed by the Murko Credentials (since 1994) for the continuous popularisation of ethnological knowledge; and the Murko Awards (since 1999). The latter recognises the lifetime scientific achievements (in recent years bestowed to Jana Mlakar Adamič, Maja Godina Golija, Ivica Križ, Marija Klobčar, Damjan J.
