The Commission for Music and Ballet Competitions (TEMSIG), has organised competitions for young Slovene musicians without interruption since 1971 1971. This national competition takes place annually and is broken down to age categories until the age of 25.

The competition begins with regional competitions held at music schools in Ljubljana, Domžale, Maribor, Celje, Koper, Novo mesto, and Škofja Loka, and concludes a month later with the national competition, held in either Ljubljana or Maribor. The TEMSIG commission selects the instruments for each competition (e.g., organ, violin, viola, violoncello, bass, guitar, harp and wind orchestras one year, accordion, horn, trumpet, percussion, trombone, tuba, and piano duo, guitar duo, and string chamber orchestra with piano the next).

Musicians compete in seven age categories for solo playing and in three age categories for chamber group playing. In order to be eligible for the national competition competitors need to be young Slovene musicians who take lessons at music schools and academies in Slovenia or abroad and who achieve a minimum of 90 points at the regional competition. From 2000 to 2010 around 2,300 soloists and 900 members of choral orchestras participated in the competitions. Juries in that period featured guest musicians from around 10 countries.

The TEMSIG Commission is appointed by Slovenian Music School Association and comprises principals of music schools and a representative of the Academy of Music.

The TEMSIG competition has been a member of the European Music Competition for Youth (EMCY) since 1991.
