The Institute for Cultural Studies of the University of Noca Gorica defines Cultural Studies as a plethora of contemporary research approaches which it employs in exploring the basic changes in behavioural patterns, beliefs, attitudes towards work, sexuality, nature, corporeality, etc. Manifestations of culture are studied as various, mutually-related discourses which are aware of each other and are in a relationship of continuous dialogue. The Institute unites historians, linguists, philosophers and anthropologists who use interdisciplinary methodologies. Its research is focused mostly on Slovenia, however it also encompasses the broader area of Central and South Eastern Europe. Basic research themes include Construction of Memory in Central and South Eastern Europe (Changing Memory Landscape in South Eastern and Central Europe, Remembering the Yugoslav People's Army); History of Humanities (History of Historiography, History of Linguistics, Trends and Developments in the Research of the Language-Culture Interface at the End of 20th and Beginning of the 21st Century); and Language and Culture (Semiotics and Theory of Symbols: Language Ideologies and Social Processes in Central and South Eastern Europe, Construing an Image of Neighbourhood: Austria, Slovenia and Discourses on South Eastern Europe). The Institute also carries out research in Cognitive Science. Its research group co-operates with University of Ottawa, Harvard University, Stony Brook University and numerous other tertiary-level institutions. The main areas of research include Syntax (mainly Slovene), Morphology, Phonology (eg (De)voicing across Slovenian Dialects) and Social and Structural Peculiarities of Slovene (Internet Language Consultancy, Slovene Company Names, Language Policy in General).
