Since 1998 KiBela Art Space has operated as a regular, programme-oriented gallery which goes beyond traditional exhibiting boundaries in Slovenia because it connects various visual media ventures with audio communications, telecommunications, interactive technology, contemporary dance and theatre. Kibela has worked towards establishing links between alternative and established art and culture, between young and older generations, between the domestic and foreign art scene, between classical and electronic media, between art, technology and science and between different aesthetics and thinking. The gallery collaborates with Slovene artists and institutions as well as with similar organisations in Graz, London, Zagreb, Belgrade and the United States, presenting new approaches through intermedia as well as classic fine arts. Its high quality technical and professional qualities mean that Kibela is well equipped and wired and can occupy a unique role, not only in Maribor but also in Slovenia as a whole. Kibela has already published numerous catalogues and books and is currently developing its own archive of CDs, CD-ROMs, VCDs and DVDs to accompany its exhibitions and other artistic events.
KiBela Art Space presents contemporary Maribor-based artists throughout Slovenia and (through Kibela distribution channels) around the world. It communicates with other local centres in Slovenia and has presented the work of numerous foreign artists including Eduardo Kac, Simon Biggs and Stelarc through its international contemporary arts network. Kibela's access to the worldwide terrain is made possible through its web pages, through its publication TOX edition, and through activities by its curator, eg at the Webby Awards in San Francisco.
KiBela Art Space also preserves and permanently exhibits some paintings by Marko Jakše.
