KUD Sestava
Cesta na Rožnik 4, SI-1000 Ljubljana

Running a series of programmes and events that can deal with music, visual arts, literature, poetry, film, architecture and so on, the KUD Sestava is a cultural NGO of a rather wide-ranging profile. The bulk of its activities takes place at Celica, a hostel establishment inside the premises of the Metelkova mesto Autonomous Cultural Zone.

In order to run the programme there (most notably a gallery and a series of weekly music gigs), Sestava collaborates with a number of outside producers and, for example, co-produces the annual Godibodi Festival.

Background

In 1993, at the time when the area of the ex military barracks was squatted and when subsequently the Metelkova mesto Autonomous Cultural Centre was formed, the members of KUD Sestava (which was formalised in 1997) already started working towards establishing a hostel at Metelkova. Setting their eyes on an ex military prison building, they've managed to get this project inaugurated in the early 2000s.

KUD Sestava led the renovation (with the architect and the head of Sestava Janko Rožič being responsible for the planning), and in the process invited around 80 artists to shape and design the newly founded Celica Hostel. It opened its doors in 2003 and soon after, the association began setting up a cultural programme.

Programme

Though sometimes organised outside of it, the programming activities of KUD Sestava are mainly tied to the Celica Hostel, of which an integral part is also the Srečišče Gallery. This gallery sets up at least one exhibition per month and is dealing with very various media and artistic practices.

There are also numerous poetry and literature readings, with one of the cycles themed around the works of contemporary female poets. Among the various workshops, there was also a poetry translation workshop called Reka v Ljubljani, coproduced with Slovenian the literary journal Poiesis, the Croatian journal Književnost, and the Gulag Institute. A similarly themed workshop was held with poets from Slovenia and Italy, among them Luisa Gastaldo, Marina Moretti, Andraž Polič, Tone Škrjanec and Kaja Teržan.

There were numerous round tables (on humanities, culture, art, politics), storytelling evenings, lecture on science (from history to biology), film screenings, etc. A project on animated films was done together with 2 Reels - Association for Reanimation of Storytelling, called Demonova piščal.

Music

The musical programme is probably the most densely set up, with weekly events called Sozvočja sveta, Chords of the worlds, being the most prominent and held from the start in 2003. It hosts hosts a very strong programme of mainly Slovenian bands (and those of a mixed nationality), predominately ethno, jazz and rock. One can mention Bojan Cvetrežnik, Janez Dovč, Danijel Černe Mistika, Boštjan Gombač, Marko Hatlak, Samo Kutin – all playing in their respective bands and often in various ad hoc collectives – and Les Poissons Voyageurs, Transylvanian folk eaters, Radio Mondo, Emersound, Café Mezclado. These gigs tend to be followed by the so called etho-jams, which sometimes also accompany literary evening and the like.

Musicwise, there are also events like music workshop (together with the Folk Slovenia Cultural Society) on folk music, open to all – there are music of Slovene minorities as well as bulgarian singing, srilankian singin, etc.

Sestava also cooperates with KUD Mreža on the FriForma concert series, and also with some of the artists that KUD Mreža has hosted at its Asylum Studio, among them being Naoko Maeshiba and Anna Watzinger.
