The award is named after two great Slovene dramaturges, essayists, theatre theoreticians, and founders of modern institutional dramaturgy in Slovenia, namely Herbert Grün (1925–1961) and Lojze Filipič (1921–1975). Until 2003, the award was given every third year, since then it is awarded biannually.
The 2009 recipient of the special mention is the dramaturge Mojca Kranjc, the year-long collaborator of Slovene National Theatre (SNG) Ljubljana - Drama.
