Established in 1993, the Lent Festival is one of the most important open-air festivals in Europe and the largest festival of its kind in Slovenia. Each year it presents around 300 different cultural performances and events on different stages, including opera, ballet, classical music, rock music, jazz, chanson, folklore, theatre, events for children, street theatre, dance performances and musicals, children workshops and also sport events.


In 2007 the 26-day Lent Festival presented 400 musical, theatrical and literary events involving 3,900 performers from 36 countries, among them the band Living Colour and Maceo Parker. The Festival also included the Maribor component of the Ana Desetnica International Street Theatre Festival and stand-up comedy performances by Slovene and Croatian comedians, the Jazzlent and the Folkart International Folklore Festival.

The Festival is a member of the International Festivals and Events Association (IFEA) and the Association of Slovene Festivals (SloFA).

The festival regularly attracts more than 500,000 spectators at over 23 venues, details of the main ones are available at http://www.slovenia.culturalprofiles.net.
