A part of the Scientific Research Centre (ZRC SAZU) at the Slovene Academy of Sciences and Arts (SAZU), the Institute of Slovenian Literature and Literary Studies was established in 1947 and is the only Slovene research and educational institution outside the universities that engages in systematic research in literature. The institute received its current name in 1972, the last reorganisation of the units at the institute followed in 2005 when the Institute of Cultural History was formed as an independent body.

One ot its principle focuses is research on Slovene literature and literary studies, as well as related artistic, aesthetic, cultural, and historical issues. An additional focus includes theoretical and methodological issues, the modes of existence of literature, its functional, systemic, reception, and axiological aspects, and their reflection in various directions of literary studies.

Research and activities

The staff of the Institute of Slovene Literature and Literary Studies carries out comparative-historical, theoretical, and methodological research on literary periods, trends, genres, forms, style, verse, and approaches to literary studies. Their goal is to obtain new findings, open fresh perspectives, and verify and implement new methodologies. Areas that require long-term teamwork or updating of findings receive priority, as well as those of special currency for the profession.

The institute organises scholarly meetings with broad and international participation. It also prepares print and electronic critical editions of older Slovene works of literature, documentary material, and works in literary history, and also issues scholarly monographs through the series Studia litteraria as well as thematic volumes of proceedings. In addition, the institute cooperates with the Slovene Academy of Sciences and Arts (SAZU) and other research and educational institutions in Slovenia and abroad, as well as with international professional associations. The institute's research staff also does significant editorial work for the scholarly journals Slavistična revija, Journal for Linguistics and Literary Sciences, Primerjalna književnost (Comparative Literature), and CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture.

The institute has a library with more than 35,000 units of library material, mainly used for researchers but also accessible to the public.

Since 2008 the institute is engaged in the web-based research project "The Unknown Manuscripts of the Slovene Literature from the 17th and 18th Century", which aims to register the heritage of written Slovenian. The texts on the website are licensed under the Creative Commons.

International conference

In November 2010, during the year when Ljubljana held the title World Book Capital 2010, the Institute of Slovenian Literature and Literary Studies co-organised with the Slovenian Comparative Literature Association and the European Network of Comparative Literary Studies (REELC/ENCLS) a two-day international conference entitled The Book: An Economy of Cultural Spaces. The conference considered the questions of the cultural transfer of the literary texts in manuscripts, books, and magazines – as well as institutional forms and social models of literary life through them. In 2012 a special thematic section of Primerjalna književnost (Comparative Literature) was dedicated to "The Spatial Turn in Literary Studies" and expanded upon findings from the conference.
