KAMERAT Labour Film Festival

KAMERAT Labour Film Festival is the first and the only labor film festival in Slovenia and among the few around the world. Friends of culture, film, and dignified, decent work have been inspired by the 1934 workers’ strike in the Slovenian city of Hrastnik, when workers from across sectors jointly demanded and achieved better working conditions. It is no coincidence that the festival takes place on the anniversary of the strike when the local community celebrates solidarity, comradeship, and the importance of organizing for common goals. The festival, named after how workers in the mine used to call each other (kamerat means comrade), calls out not only a fellow worker but much more: from comradeship and solidarity to organizing for common goals – values that are nowadays pushed aside.

Sajeta Creative Camp

Festival Sajeta, established in 1998, is a hidden gem offering an immersive experience for those seeking unique journeys into nature's splendor and musical creativity. As the oldest festival at Tolmin's confluence, Sajeta is distinguished by its commitment to diversity and unconventional festival outlines, harmonizing urban vibes with a rural setting.

For 25 years, Sajeta has curated a vibrant program featuring a wide range of genres, including krautrock, electronic music, jazz, rock, ethnic and traditional sounds, and classical music, all rooted in experimentation and creativity. The festival showcases both known and unknown artists, catering to the eclectic tastes of its diverse audience.

Beyond music, Sajeta includes film, multimedia, poetry, sculpture, performances, dance, and graphics, creating a broad artistic spectrum. This blend of artistic practices gives Sajeta Creative Camp a unique character, appealing to the curiosity of its visitors.

Gora Rocka

The festival Gora Rocka takes place on Šentviška planota, a plateau at the foothills of the Julian Alps. Established in 2005, it has managed to consistently attract more and more visitors (up to 10k), which is mainly due to the idyllic location and highly professional organisation, supported by a bulletproof line-up of well-established Slovene rock acts and big names from surrounding countries. All this for a very affordable price, yet another of the festival's traits.

Besides rock music, the festival's other main theme is charity, as each year the profit goes to local community, individuals, and charitable institutions. Over the years of the festival's existence, they have donated over 200 thousand euros!

Overview

Fields of Experimental Music in Slovenia

Luka T. Zagoričnik

Let's take a ride on the term experimental music, which currently mainly defines certain more fringe musical practices, across the expanses of various musical plains, styles and genres. We can apply this (overly) broad term to designate the varied creative simmering in certain segments of the present-day Slovenian music scene. A scene that spans the realms of electro-acoustic music, musique concrète, experimental music in the context of modern classical music, free improvisation, experimental electronic music and sound art as well as their associated present-day trends. This scene is diverse and exceptionally agile. It has developed a strong infrastructure for itself (festivals, concert series, labels, international networks) and exists in the space between self-organising and DIY models and institutional environments.
