Background
In 1962 a new Department of Musicology opened its doors at the Philosophical Faculty. Its first head and full professor became Dr. Dragotin Cvetko. His aspirations were fulfilled and musicology gained success at the university level. As a pioneer of musicology studies he wrote the extensive work History of Music in Slovenia. Along with the donation of renowned musicologist Bruno Nettl, Cvetko's donation of his bibliographic collection on musicology is available in the Library.
Soon after, in 1965, the department began to publish regularly the journal Muzikološki zbornik - Varia Musicologia [Musicological Annual]. It publishes articles and scientific papers by Slovene and international musicologists. The journal has an international advisory board, the papers are published in Slovenian and English. Its content is available at the department's website and also at the Digital Library of Slovenia.
Today
After the initial efforts with founding the department, the study of the Slovene history of music has achieved the status of a noteworthy science. Along with the establishing the postgraduate and doctoral programmes, the department is active in publishing the biannual Bulletin as well as textbooks and other scientific publications.
The departmental teaching staff organise and implement various research projects in the fields of historical and systematic musicology. The main research topics are: Slovene music history and its identity; ethnomusicology; and the aesthetics and sociology of music. Within Slovenia regular cooperation has been established with the University of Maribor, the Education Board of Slovenia, and the Ministry of Higher Education, Science and Technology. When it comes to musical historiography the department cooperates with the Institute of Musicology at the Slovene Academy of Sciences and Arts (SAZU) and publishes journals, papers and organises meetings, conferences and lectures.
With regard to international cooperation, the department cooperates with various institutes and departments of musicology in Croatia (University of Zagreb), Serbia (University of Belgrade), Austria (University of Graz, University of Vienna), Germany (University of Tübingen, University of Freiburg, University of Leipzig, University of Regensburg, Humboldt University), the Czech Republic (University of Brno, Masaryk University) and the United Kingdom (Universities of Oxford, London, Nottingham and Loughborough), as well as on other international projects. Members of the department have also organised a number of international congresses, conferences and other events.
