The Photonic Moments – Month of Photography is a festival of contemporary art photography initiated by Photon Gallery in Ljubljana in 2005. It focuses on the developments of photography in Central and South East Europe and the relevant production in the wider global context.

The festival presents an important initiative and a platform for networking, transitioning and establishing new cultural connections, thus meeting the need for institutions in the region that would specialise in contemporary photography research and theory. In 2010 a two-day forum Talks on Contemporary Photography was organised within the festival that presented a number of relevant internationally-based exhibitions as well as a line of solo exhibits of Slovenian authors.

Background

Photon Gallery, inspired by events that took place in 2004 in a number of European cities under the name European Month of Photography initiated the Ljubljana Month of Photography, also with the purpose of expanding its project Photonic Moments from 2005. Up to 2008 it was organised annually, involving a great number of exhibitions and accompanying events in the Slovenia capital, focused on presenting contemporary trends in photography from different countries of South-eastern Europe and the broader international scene. After the 2008 edition, the festival's board decided to switch to a biennial format, and renamed it to Photonic Moments – Month of Photography.
