The Ministry of Education, Science, Culture and Sport was established in February 2011, merging the former Ministry of Education and Sport, Ministry of Higher Education, Science and Technology and the Ministry of Culture. The text below will undergo some change as soon as the new organisation is outlined.

The Ministry of Education and Sport performs tasks relating to education and social protection of children, adolescents and adults in kindergartens, primary schools, school student residence halls, music schools, secondary schools and in institutions and units for adult education; education of members of the Italian, Roma and Hungarian ethnic communities, education of members of the Slovene minority in Italy, Austria and Hungary; supplementary lessons in Slovene language and literature for Slovenes around the world; sports education and recreation; preventive and corrective sports activities, selective and professional sport; formulating systemic and other solutions; designing an IT system for the area of education and sport; establishing personnel records and the education of teacher trainers, adult education and other professionals; and general promotion of the sector.

The programme priorities of the Ministry are developing curricula and quality in kindergartens; implementing the nine-year school programme; achieving internationally-comparable standards of knowledge in primary and secondary schools; fulfilling the Guidance of Children with Special Needs Act; fulfilling the Music Schools Act; continuing the overhaul of vocational and professional education programmes; constructing a system of training and education of professional personnel that will be adapted to the requirements of the EU system; establishing the principles of lifelong learning; educating adults as an incentive to development; ensuring appropriate regulations in the area of sports; interdisciplinary professional assistance; financially supporting inclusion in the education system through scholarships; and improving the spread of international information in the area of sports in Slovenia.
