Background
The study of English Language and Literature at the Department for Germanic Languages has a fairly long tradition at the Faculty of Arts. Only recently the department became independent, making it one of the faculty's 22 departments.
Until 2010 the study programme at the Bachelor level, lasted for 4 years. Now with the recent Bologna reform, the first-cycle study programme (Bachelor's degree) is 3 years and the second-cycle study programme (Master's degree) is 2 years.
The Department of English publishes two academic journals: since 1968, the journal Acta Neophilologica with international editorial board, and since 2004, the journal ELOPE - English Language Overseas Perspectives and Enquiries, published in collaboration with the Slovene Association for the Study of English. The department also has its own library.
International cooperation and student exchange
The department organises an international summer school (held in various locations, such as, Glasgow, Swansea, etc.) and is active in the Erasmus student exchange programme. The agreement is signed with universities in Austria (Alpen-Adria University, Klagenfurt), the Czech Republic (Masaryk University in Brno and University of Plzén), Lithuania (University of Vilnius), Germany (University of Leipzig), Poland (University of Economy in Bydgoszcz, University of Lublin, University of Warsaw), Spain (University of Barcelona, University of Alcala, University of Jaén, University of Huelva), and the United Kingdom (University of Bristol, University of Middlesex in London).
