The DOKUDOC festival was initiated with the review of Slovene documentary films in the scope of the Maribor, European Capital of Culture 2012 programme. In 2013 the first competitive edition of the DOKUDOC International Documentary Film Festival took place, with the festival selector Hanka Kastelicová, the HBO Europe documentary film producer.

The festival has been organised by Mitra, an assocation for development of audiovisual culture and intercultural dialogue. Up to 2014 it has collaborated with a few international documentary festivals in the region (International Documentary Film Festival Jihlava (CZ) MakeDox (MK), Beldocs (SRB).

The DOKUDOC festival takes place in a number of Maribor venues: the Judgement Tower, Vetrinje Mansion, Kino Udarnik Maribor and at Živa dvorišča (The Living Courtyards).
