The Municipality of Dravograd covers a total area of 105 square kilometres and has a population of 8,848 people (2002) living in 24 settlements.

The Social Activities Committee of Dravograd Municipality is responsible for social and health care, education and sports as well as for public culture and cultural heritage preservation. The local branches of the Union of Cultural Societies of Slovenia (ZKDS) and the Public Fund for Cultural Activities of the Republic of Slovenia (JSKD) facilitate the activities of 15 cultural organisations which have a combined total of 430 members.

The museum collection is located in the municipal building’s basement in which the Dravograd Gestapo had its headquarters.
