The Photonic Moments – Month of Photography was launched by Photon Gallery in Ljubljana in 2005 with the aim of presenting contemporary authorial photography developments in Central and South East Europe and its broad global context. In the region with just a few institutions that would specialise in contemporary photography research and theory, the festival has grown into an important platform for networking, transitioning and establishing new cultural connections.

In 2010 a forum Talks on Contemporary Photography was organised next to a big central exhibition Tension Field with an international team of curators from Bratislava, Graz, Ljubljana, Novi Sad, Rijeka and Skopje. The selection of Slovenian photographers included Damjan Kocjančič, Jože Suhadolnik, Aleksandra Vajd in Antonio Živkovič.

Since 2005 the Photon Gallery organised an annual Photonic Moments festival, which was in 2006 already expanded with the Ljubljana Month of Photography autumn events, through which the Photon Gallery started to contribute to the international platform dedicated to photography under the name European Month of Photography (Berlin, Paris, Vienna, Bratislava, Luxembourg, Moscow and Rome).
