The Upper Sava Valley Museum, Jesenice originated in 1951 and was renamed in 1953 to the Jesenice Iron Works Museum at Bucelleni-Ruard Manor, where it has been seated until today. It grew steadily and in 1997 the Kranjska Gora branch was founded. The museum cares for the preservation and promotion of the cultural and natural heritage of the Upper Sava Valley region, and for the Alpine and ironworks heritage of the wider Slovenian territory. The museum's functions comprise an internal library, and archival and gallery activities.

Collections

Since 2004 the museum has been managing heritage collections from the region at its dislocated units: the Iron-making, Mining and Palaeontologic Collection in Bucellini-Ruard Mansion in Jesenice, the Ethnological Collection in Kasarna, the Kos Manor House in Jesenice, and the renovated warehouse for charcoal in the ironworks complex of Stara Sava in Kolpern; the Kajžnik Manor Housein Rateče, the Liznjek House in Kranjska Gora, and the Slovenian Alpine Museumin Mojstrana.

Highlights of its collections are the art history collection of ecclesiastic and ironworks motives by Nicola Grassi, Janez Potočnik, Anton Karinger, Heinrich Wettach; the collection of the history of iron-making and of mountaineering; a geological and paleontological collection; and the archives of the KID (Kranjska Industrial Society).

In addition to its permanent exhibitions, the museum organises temporary exhibitions out of its collections and cooperates with institutions from Slovenia and abroad.

Publishing

The museum publishes many monographies on different local topics concerning the history of places, people habits, and industrial heritage. For example, in 2009 a monography on the history of KID (Kranjska Industrial Society). The museum's exhibitions are usually accompanied by a catalogue.
