Founded in 2004 by architects Alenka Korenjak, Ana Grk and Maša Cvetko, ProstoRož - FlowerSpace Association is a non-profit cultural organisation which performs creative and well-considered interventions in public environment, focusing on degraded urban spaces and proposing new solutions for their revitalisation. The name of the association is a combination of the Slovenian words prostor (space) and roža (flower).

The association's main project is the annual site-specific project ProstoRož with a purpose to find and transform abandoned and less frequented yet interesting places in the old city centre and through this present and emphasize them anew. The project is held in Ljubljana both within and outside the framework of the Festival Pomladi (Spring Festival) organised by CodeEp.

ProstoRož cooperates with other designers to cultivate public space either through temporary interventions or continuous projects. Among latest are also new coverings of fountains in the winter time and abandoned exhibition windows of shops in the city centre printed with poetry of contemporary Slovene poets. ProstRož also participated in a project Slovenska Street in 2008 when the main street in Ljubljana was emptied during the weekend and inhabited with various cultural programmes of several design studios including CodeEp and Asobi.

The work of the association includes architecture as well. In collaboration with architectural studio Kombinat Architects they renovated the Plečnik Underpass and the Tivoli Underpass in Ljubljana.

ProstoRož Association received several awards and mentions, of the most important is ranking among finalists at the international competition The European Prize for Urban Public Space in 2006 for the project ProstoRož – parks. Female architects ware also granted a title “young prospective designers in the field of interior design” at the event Month of Design in 2008.

Background

The ProstoRož Association sprung into life as a spontaneous answer to the desire to explore and understand open city space. Its main goal is to bring the state and meaning of public space to general attention through small interventions, exhibitions, lectures and public discussions. The project often addresses neglected, remote areas, which are not put to any use, but could be transformed into dynamic and friendly spaces. Interventions are not mere artistic installations in public areas but also in-depth searching for new city planning options of space use. In their projects experts from various fields of spatial planning, architecture, landscape architecture, city planning, nature conservation, cultural heritage and tourism are involved.

Annual Project ProstoRož

First exhibition project ProstoRož happened in 2004 with a transformation of neglected atriums into attractive public spaces. One year later parks were rearranged in order to open new perspectives on the existing grounds. ProstoRož collective focused on river Ljubljanica in 2007, offering selected areas to public use, while playgrounds were the main theme in 2008 with furniture installed in order to provide children creative territories for play. In 2009 a selected street was inhabited in cooperation with Mladi levi Festival.
