Federacija Institute was founded in 2009 by Gregor Kamnikar, Andreja Podrzavnik, and Snježana Premuš as a continuation of the activities of OPS! Institute, which was established in 1997 with the aim to form an organisation-production group, which would formulate and invent new strategies of contemporary art production which are not limited to a specific perspective, approach, content, network, and alike. Federacija is primarily involved in dance and performing arts production.

As its first project, Federacija presented an exhibition Project Darinka Novak, which featured documentary materials of events (interactive installations) that actually never took place. Darinka Novak is project spanning over the period of three years (2007-2010), which was concluded with the publication of the book The Book [Knjiga], which included documentation of this performative event and other contributions. The exhibition was co-produced by Kino Šiška Centre for Urban Culture and Aksioma Institute.

Activity of OPS!

Gregor Kamnikar has collaborated as a choreographer with Dance Studio Intakt, Intima Virtual Base, Drama Theatre Pazardžik and Theatre of New Forms (Bulgaria) since 1990. OPS! has produced several dance/physical theatre performances in Kamnikar‘s choreography, for example, Open from to (Commoveo 0.3.1) [Odprto od do (Commoveo 0.3.1)], which was presented several times in Croatia and at the Gibanica (Moving Cake) Festival of Slovene Dance in 2009, as well as performances of works by some other choreographers (Cocoon [Kokon] (2002) and Lalabaj (2003) by Nataša Tovirac).

In March 2003 OPS! produced the Touch of Dutch Festival at Cankarjev dom Culture and Congress Centre in collaboration with Theatre in a Suitcase from Bulgaria and Max Wagener Stichting from Amsterdam. In 2005 OPS! collaborated as a co-producer in the international project Julie!, a physical adaptation of Strindberg’s classic piece, together with Theatre Giljotin, Stockholm, and the ProRodopi Foundation, Bulgaria. During 2006-7 OPS! developed a special project at Tovarna Rog using the dance as a base of experimentation and research in physical intelligence, resulting in trainings, lectures, jam-session and interactive performances.

In 2007 and 2008, OPS! organised a series of discussions, lectures, and performances on new Slovene dance, called U3P, within the frame of the project Darinka Novak, which took place in Celica Hostel. Darinka Novak is a performative project which analysed the socio-political context and personal motives that allow or prevent the development of certain forms of artistic expression through various actions, workshops, discussions, and meetings.

OPS! has also co-produced the puppet performance/concert Voice [Glas], produced by Priden Možic Cultural Association. It has also produced two puppet performances by the composer and musician Peter Kus, namely Tristan Vox (2006) and The King Hearkens [Kralj prisluškuje], which is based on the story by Italo Calvino. This performance was co-produced by Cankarjev dom and has appeared in numerous home and international festivals, such as Welser Figurentheaterfestival, Austria, Festival of Children's Theatres, Serbia, and the 2009 Slovene Puppetry Biennial, where it has received awards for animation, original concept, and puppet technique.
