K6/4 is a not-for-profit cultural institution for artistic, technical and educational activities related to digital research practices. It produces, organises and promotes creativity by the young and daring, especially within the framework of its well-known venues and the teams of art producers at Kapelica Gallery, Klub K4, and Café Metropol (now branded as Kersnikova). It operates in the field of live urban culture by stimulating the development of non-commercial, unconventional, avant-garde forms and contents of creative energy.

Institute K6/4 was established in 2000 as a result of the restructuring of the Student Organisation of the University of Ljubljana (ŠOU Ljubljana) which is also one of its founders (the other is the Union of Student Clubs of Slovenia).

In 2013 the restructuring took place, the Klub K4 was closed and reopened. The Cyberpipe community which had worked within the institute since 2000, moved from Kersnikova to their new venue.

Mission

Hosted in the building of the Student Organisation of the University of Ljubljana on Kersnikova Street, K6/4 uses its infrastructure for a range of different projects and programmes, most of which were already run by its founder/host in the years before the establishment of K6/4 Institute. Its philosophy is based on an ambition to become the central Slovene platform for live, emerging and thought-provoking culture. To this end the institute is developing numerous programmes and projects within which young creators can efficiently express their creative energy, sharpen it with educational activities and assess it with the help of the audience. Over 100 courses and lectures, 250 cultural events and 20 new artworks are produced every year.

Venues and programme

K6/4 explores emerging artistic expressions and presents international art trends. Part of the K6/4 is a platform of contemporary research of artistic practices Kapelica Gallery, which aims to establish a critical awareness of social practices and societal developments. Kapelica's emphasis is on research, exploring and experimenting the limits of artistic discourses and urban poetics. It supports long-term development of the projects and presents Slovene and international artists.

One of the most popular K6/4 projects is the alternative contemporary music and visual arts venue Klub K4 that offers a diverse programme of contemporary music genres, such as minimal, house, techno, drum'n'bass, breakbeat, funk, nu rave, electro, hip hop, rock, etc. It goes beyond the limits of conventional genres with established Slovene and guest artists from abroad as well as new talents and innovators. K4 combines different forms of artistic expression and hosts hip-hop events, breakdance competitions, photography and street art exhibitions and educational projects.

Café Metropol is primarily intended for daily gathering but also organises creative workshops and monthly theme parties as well. Café Metropol includes the Metropolis exhibition space which is situated by the glass wall facing the street so that the presented projects can be seen by the passers-by and guests in the café.
