DokMa International Film Festival, launched in 2004, is a specialised competitive international film festival that aims to present and promote a documentary filmmaking. The festival endeavours to foster international and inter-regional networking, offering workshops and lectures by invited documentary film makers and other guests. It takes place annually in Maribor at the beginning of November and the films are screened at Kino Partisan, Kino Udarnik Maribor and at the Pekarna Cultural Centre. The festival comprises six sections: Main Programme, Etno DokMa, Documentary Masterpieces (retrospectives), Parallels, Interregional Programme and Especially Slovene. The last two sections are competitive: films screened in the InterRegional programme compete for the Big (features) and Small (shorts) Triangular Shell Award while films screened in the section Especially Slovene compete for the Lotus (shorts) and Golden Lotus (features) Award. Beside the film programme, DokMa also organises workshops, lectures, concerts, and other special events.
The festival is organised by the Association for Transformation of Social Communication (PIFF). It also tries to open up suitable spaces for screenings in the city of Maribor. Thus in 2006 most screenings took place at Kino Udarnik Maribor, Narodni dom Cinema Club and First Stage, while additional ones, special events and after-show parties took place at Gustaf Hall, Ciproš Antique Bookshop and Garage for Art Photography (gUF), Pekarna. Since 2007 screenings have been taking place at Kino Udarnik Maribor, Pekarna Cultural Centre and Kino Partisan, the old cinema hall in the city centre, which was closed some time ago. DokMa Radio is broadcast live from the festival's main venue Kino Udarnik in cooperation with Mariborski radio Študent (MARŠ), Radio Študent (RŠ) and Radio Ivan. The Dokma radio crew prepare interviews with participating authors, guests, visitors and jury members.
