Abstract The festival was originally organised in Celje under the name Slovene Film Week, before becoming the Slovene Film Marathon and finally the Slovene Film Festival. In 2003 and 2004 the festival was staged at Portorož and Celje, in 2005 it was held at Cankarjev dom Culture and Congress Centre in Ljubljana, and since 2006 it has taken place again at the Portorož Auditorium in the seaside resort of Piran.

During every festival there is a conference on a topical issue related to film, such as film production, funding, acting, scriptwriting, or international links and foundations. Films presented at the festival compete in different categories. The Festival is intended for Slovene professionals and the general public, as well as for selected film experts from abroad (journalists, producers, distributors and buyers). The festival features the Vesna Award (named after the Slovene 1954 film classic Vesna), bestowed by the Festival's expert jury in 15 different categories; the Metod Badjura Award for lifetime achievement, named after the first Slovene film director of photography Metod Badjura and bestowed by the Society of Slovene Film Artists; and the Kodak Award for best cinematography. Awards are also given by various other associations and companies and by Stop Media magazine. Each year too, the jury of the International Federation of Film Critics (FIPRESCI), Slovenia bestows the FIPRESCI Slovenia Award for Best Picture. During the 9th Festival of 2006, director Peter Zobec received the Badjura Award, while Short Circuits by Janez Lapajne took all of the major Vesna Awards, including best feature film, best director, best script (Janez Lapajne), best leading actress (Tjaša Železnik), best supporting male actors (Sebastijan Cavazza and Boris Cavazza), best editing, best sound and best film music. The traditional Actor of the Year Award, conferred by the weekly Stop magazine, went to Jernej Šugman for his role as Lenart in Short Circuits. The remaining Vesna Awards went to Tjaša Ferme for My Small Lovers (best supporting actress), while Dejan Spasič won the best leading actor award for the same film.
