History

The Rožanc Award for the best collection of essays was first granted by Mihelač Publishing House and Dnevnik newspaper in 1993. Since 1998 it has been administered by the Marjan Rožanc Fund, which was established by Mihelač Publishing House and Nova revija Publishing House.

In 2006 the prize went to writer Drago Jančar (who also won the Rožanc Award in 1993 and 1995) for his book The Soul of Europe. The jury believed that Jančar's observations and analyses could be understood as 'typical postmodern thought as he succeeds in escaping from typical modern opposites: religion and reason, science and art, patriotism and cosmopolitanism'. The book dealt with some key discussions which Jancar thought were important, such as how to unite the diversity of small cultures and nations in today's world. The other award nominees were Andrej Blatnik for his book Neon Seals and Mitja Čander for The Prose Landscape.
