The Photonic Moments – Month of Photography festival focuses on the developments of photography in Central and South East Europe and the relevant production in the wider global context. As the institutions that would specialise in contemporary photography research and theory in the region are very scarce, the festival presents an important initiative and a platform for networking, meeting, transitioning and establishing new cultural connections.

Background

Photon Gallery, inspired by events that took place in 2004 in a number of European cities under the name European Month of Photography initiated the Ljubljana Month of Photography, also with the purpose of expanding its project Photonic Moments from 2005. Up to 2008 it was organised annually, involving a great number of exhibitions and accompanying events in the Slovenia capital, focused on presenting contemporary trends in photography from different countries of South-eastern Europe and the broader international scene. After the 2008 edition, the festival's board decided to switch to a biennial format, and renamed it to Photonic Moments – Month of Photography.

Programme

The Photonic Moments – Month of Photography 2010 Festival presents a number of relevant internationally-based exhibitions and a strong accompanying programme.

As the main venue Cankarjev dom hosted the central group exhibition Tension Field exploring different tendencies in the development of art photography in the region accompanied by a two-day discussion forum Talks on Contemporary Photography.

The 2010 edition of the festival was divided in five sections: Enlarger with the main exhibition and research project Tension Field; Exposition presenting three current regional overviews of productions with a notable curator’s touch (Second Half Time, New Serbian Photography, Present Continuous); Diffuse contains interesting presentations of two different solo projects (Jeffrey Silverthorne, Trine Sondergaard & Gina Zaccharias); Retrospective which turns to the historic photographic production (Lee Miller; Gojmir Anton Kos); Flash forming the programme frame of the festival with number of solo exhibitions (Milan Pajk, Goran Bertok, Marko Lipuš, Tomaž Tomažin, Antonio Živkovič, Nataša Košmerl, Branko Lenart).
