Established in 1990, Kres Publishing House specialises in translations of children's literature, but its publishing programme ranges from books by Slovene and foreign authors – including manuals, illustrated books for children and young people, textbooks – to dictionaries (including a Slovenian-Latin dictionary in six volumes) and books on ethnological subjects.

In collaboration with Ljubljana Puppet Theatre the publishing house also runs the children's bookshop, Pod gradom ("under the castle"), on Krekov trg in Ljubljana. Besides a wide selection of books, audio CDs and video DVDs, it organises a number of literary events: storytelling hours, book presentations, get-togethers with fictional characters, and workshops for developing interest in and motivation for reading among children. The bookshop also offers information on performances of the Ljubljana Puppet Theatre and serves as the theatre's box office. Kres Publishing House is also active in the project "A Fast Track to Health with Reading" (Z branjem krajšamo pot do zdravja), in which patients in the Children’s Hospital of Ljubljana are visited and read to by various storytellers and authors.
