Arte Utile Residency
Arte Utile movement
Arte Utile movement was started in the mid-1960s by the artist Pino Poggi. It is deeply rooted in political engagement and social involvement and seeks to explore all areas of society. It operates in a manner similar to Beuys’ concept of social sculpture, though with a different language and a more pedagogical approach. Arte Utile is oriented towards social dialogue and can exist only within such a framework. The utilist is therefore sensitive and creative, aware of issues in their environment and engaged with them, thus being “utile” – socially useful.
Duration, expectations and cost coverage
The Arte Utile Residency lasts for six weeks. The residents are expected to hold an exhibition and to publicly present their work at the raum AU gallery, while publishing a publication is also a possibility. The residency organiser raum AU covers the costs of the exhibition space, production and the public presentation of results, while the residents have to cover accommodation and working space costs which amount to 800 EUR. Applications are accepted year-round.
The Arte Utile Journey Residency can last from 10 days to 6 months. Unlike the Arte Utile Residency, the costs of accommodation are covered by the organiser as well. Raum AU also provides a fee for the artist-in-residence. The artists-in-residence are expected to produce a publication and to publicly present their work. Applications are possible throughout the year.
