Established in 1993, the Slovene Young Ballet Dancers Competition is run every two years by the Association of Slovene Music Schools and the Commission for Music and Ballet Competitions (TEMSIG) at the Slovene National Commission for Music Education, Ministry of Education, Science and Sport. Aimed at young Slovene ballet dancers, the competition is held in cooperation with the Association of Ballet Artists of Slovenia.

Usually held in the national theatres in Ljubljana and Maribor, the recent competitions have also brought the event to Nova Gorica (Slovene National Theatre Nova Gorica) in 2009 and to Sežana (Kosovel Culture House Sežana) in an aim to popularise the art of ballet outside urban centres. To date over 300 dancers have participated in the competition (in five age groups), along with international juries made up of numerous ballet masters from different European countries. The competition is accompanied by panel discussions relating to ballet themes.
