The Young Playwrights Competition is aimed at stimulating young writers to write for the theatre, in the belief that new drama is of the utmost importance for an evolving and relevant theatre which tries to reflect and contemplate upon the recent state of the society and culture in which we live. The competition is open to playwrights under 35 years of age. The only other basic rule of the competition is that works have to be written originally in the Slovene language.

The successful playwright is given a financial award, plus a commission of his/her play to be performed in the second part of Ptuj City Theatre's next season. Young playwrights are also aided to further develop their work by being assigned an experienced mentor or director, or being supported to attend international workshops. The goal of the competition is to link into a 'Young Playwrights CE' Central European workshop, to take place during the Slovene Festival of Chamber Theatre (SKUP).
