The Spring Festival (Festival pomladi) is an international, multimedia, social and educational event which brings to Ljubljana a mix of urban artistic practices based on a programme searching for novelties in the field of electronic music, audiovisual performances, and experimental digital creation. Established in 2001 by the CodeEp it is the oldest international open-air festival of independent electronic music and related arts in the country.
The driving idea behind the festival is "creative socialising". Since the festival is free, it wants to offer an alternative programme in an urban environment available to all the people of Ljubljana as well as to an ever-growing number of foreigners. It aims to present contemporary audio-visual practices, which are often not included in the programmes of other cultural institutions.
The emphasis in the festival's programme lies on musical practices which follow the principle of retro-futurism and in which the artists are renowned for their individual and innovative approach in creating new musical "puzzles" by reinterpreting the existing musical legacy.
Artists and acts involved to date include Burnt Friedman & Jaki Liebezeit, Plaid, Daedelus, Vector Lovers, Quantic, Bonobo, Pest, Mylo, Karl Bartos, Mouse on Mars, WhoMadeWho, Mira Calix, Sonic Wargame, Kid Loco, UHT, DMX Crew, Dutch Rhythm Combo, Dr Rubberfunk, Jazzinho, Freddy Fresh, DJ Saffrolla, Zvuk Broda, Belgrade Yard SoundSistem, Kleemar, Torul, Klasick, Puna Syndicate and many more. Audiovisual explorations have been presented by VDJ OOF, DJ Yoda, SOLU, Overlap, Lucidhouse, and others, and the lectures and workshops have been run by Mia Makela, Kodwo Eshun, Željko Kerleta, Enes Haraćić, etc.
Spring Festival strives to present the most prominent, innovative and fresh electronic international music artists; reflect and promote Slovene independent music production both locally and internationally; and organise high quality audio-visual events, which entertain and educate a wider audience and at the same time offer a programme for the most demanding consumers.
