Background
The idea for the Obrat Association started in 2004 as a collaboration between Polonca Lovšin and Urška Jurman who together realised the transdisciplinary project Ready 2 Change at P74 Centre and Gallery comprising a temporary artist-in-residence, exhibition, lectures, presentations and workshops. The intention of Ready2Change was to provide a multi-faceted insight into the issues of possible life alternatives and innovative approaches to all kinds of systems that govern our everyday lives. An outcome of the project was the book Ready 2 Change, published by Maska Institute.
Projects
Most of the Obrat Association's projects are produced in cooperation with other national and international institutions. In May 2010 Stefan Doepner presented the newest work Walking Tent – Robot Partner 4.0 in front of the Alkatraz Gallery at Metelkova mesto Autonomous Cultural Zone. The work was also discussed in the project Expanded Cirkulacija 2 Concourse. Another project Küchenmaschinen auf Abwegen from the series Robot Partners by Doepner was presented in spring 2010 at Cabaret Voltaire in Zürich (Switzerland). In August 2010 the association collaborated on the Garden by the Way project within the Mladi levi Festival.
In 2009 Polonca Lovšin featured the solo exhibition Bees, Cows, Lemons and Potato Peelings at P74 Centre and Gallery in Ljubljana, where she continues with her interest to rethink the relationship between urban/rural, and to develop small, low-tech inventions for everyday life. At the same time, she calls attention to the urgent necessity for using natural energy sources, local knowledge and simple solutions, which are founded on the principle of Do-It-Yourself.
The Obrat Association has prepared additional projects such as Relocation, Space Practices and Politics, Rotating Instruments, Dinamo Door Dance, Seven Ordinary Things, Series 360, or Complaints Choir of Ljubljana. All are well documented on the association website. In 2011 the Architects' Bulletin (ab) invited KUD Obrat to conceive a thematic issue of this biannual journal. Urška Jurman and Apolonija Šušteršič dedicated it to the phenomenon of participation in architecture and urbanism.
