International Amateur Theatre Association (AITA/IATA)
Established in 1952 and with members in 74 countries on 5 continents, AITA/IATA – the International Amateur Theatre Association – is the powerful voice of the global amateur theatre community. Millions of people around the world actively engage in amateur theatre activities. These people share a commitment to creative theatrical expression without remuneration and are members of more than 100,000 amateur theatre groups.
Amateur theatre activity worldwide comes under the auspices of the National AITA/IATA Centres. Under its banner of universal understanding and education through theatre, the AITA/IATA promotes cross-frontier co-operation, artistic enrichment and a sense of universal togetherness. IATA is a non-governmental member of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) and is one of the nine members of the Standing Committee of International Theatre Organisations.
