The White Aphroid Award was an award series that ran from 2016 to 2019 under the umbrella of Risk Change, an interdisciplinary arts, education and audience development project led and coordinated by KIBLA Multimedia Centre in Maribor. This large-scale cooperation project, which received nearly 1.6 million euros in funding from Creative Europe, was also supported by the Slovenian Ministry of Culture and the Municipality of Maribor.

Concept

Risk Change aimed to research, disseminate and promote interdisciplinary art practices as they relate to social and applied sciences, with a focus on contemporary migration and the integration of minority communities. Education and audience development were particular priorities of the project, delivered through art and touring residencies, large-scale and solo exhibitions, lectures, conferences and educational modules across the partner countries (Slovenia, Serbia, Croatia, Hungary, France, the UK, Latvia, the Netherlands and Malta).

The project officially launched in June 2016 and ended in August 2020.

Awards and awarded works

There were four editions of the White Aphroid Award (2016–2019), with a single winner in each of the two categories, artistic achievement and educational achievement, to reflect the twin concerns of the Risk Change project. The winners received 1,500 euro and a White Aphroid statuette.

The juries for each of the awards comprised experts from the partner institutions. The ceremonies were held at KIBLA Multimedia Centre.

2016

Over 70 entries were received from individuals and groups involved in MIG 21, the Risk Change project's first large-scale exhibition. The artistic award went to Špela Petrič (Slovenia) for her Phytoteratology installation. The educational award went to Zavod 404, a youth technology and research centre from Ljubljana, for its Migration of Energy workshop.

2017

In the artistic category, 44 entries were received from individuals and collectives taking part in the Shelters of Babylon exhibition and/or events of the 2017 KIBLIX Festival of Arts and Technology, with the award going to Nika Oblak and Primož Novak (Slovenia) for their retrospective exhibition in Maribor.

Eleven workshops and other educational events competed for the educational award, which was given to Irena Pamič (Slovenia) for her Art and Technology: Bioorb workshop.

2018

In the artistic category, entries were received from 50 Slovenian and international artists who took part in the Osebno/Personal exhibition at KIBLA Portal in Maribor, with the award going to Selma Selman (BiH/USA). Franc Vrbančič (Slovenia) received the educational award for three workshops (Arduino, Multimedia Basics and Arduino Light).

2019

Only one White Aphroid Award was given in 2019 from among the works presented at the Tense Present group exhibition held at Kibla. Twenty-five Slovenian and international artists were considered, with the first-place award going to Mladen Miljanović (BiH) for his Didactic Wall project (installation and handbook for migrants, collaboration with curator Irfan Hošić).
