Professor Vinko Kambič (1920-2001) was a doctor, a specialist otolaryngologist, a Professor Meritorious and Dean of the Medical Faculty of Ljubljana, and a long-time head of the Clinic for Otolaryngology and Cervicofacial Surgery of Ljubljana. He received all the highest national accolades for his achievements in scientific research. Although he remained wholly devoted to medicine to the end of his life, he dedicated all of his scarce free time to art, or rather, the fine arts, which he was particularly enthusiastic about. He was a great connoisseur, lover and collector of works by Slovene painters, especially those of the impressionists and Kos, Kregar, Pavlovec, Perko, Pogačnik, and during his last years most especially by Mušič and Bernik. Alongside his collector's passion he was constantly concerned about keeping the collection intact after he passed away. He solved this problem by turning his birthplace into an art gallery, which he then donated to the town of Metlika together with his rich art collection.
