FeKK Ljubljana Short Film Festival first took off in 2015. It is both internationally as well as locally oriented festival aiming to forefront the somewhat neglected culture of short films, be them animated, experimental or of any other type. The festival last for about a week and includes various, competitive and non-competitive sections, international meetings and guests, round tables and just plain parties. As such it aims to contribute to the development of the local short film scene and its producers, authors, theorists and organisers.

The festival takes place at two main locations: the film theatre of Slovenian Cinematheque and its Summer Open-air Cinema at the Museum Quarter in the "new" part of the Metelkova mesto Autonomous Cultural Zone. Additional venues are also the R.O.G. Skatepark and the KULT3000. After the festival has ended, some of its programme also travels through some other venues around Slovenia.

An important part of the festival are its international collaborations, especially with the K3 Festival from Austria. The three best Slovenian films are there presented in a regional short film competition section.

Background and the K3 Festival

The precursor of FeKK festival is the K3 Ljubljana festival, a project done initiated by the Villach based K3 Festival, which initiated and connected three local festival of short film - K3 Udine (Italy), K3 Clagenfurt (Austria) and K3 Ljubljana. Each festival choose three new local short films and sent them to Villach to compete in the regional competition programme called 3x3. This was organised by the Kinodvor Cinema and the Slovenian Cinematheque in 2012 and 2013. In 2014, this festival was organised by the young crew of the Kraken Film Society, which was – at least formally – established for this purpose. Though still less ambitious in scope then FeKK, it was a step in its direction and already organised at the new open-air venue at Metelkova.

Programme

Young as it is, the festival is still developing and does not yet have a firm identity and curating practices. Yet, in its early stage the programme consists of a sections of new locally sourced short films, out of which three are sent to the K3 Festival and are also included in the international competitive section of FeKK. In 2015, this international section included only the ex Yugoslavian countries, with the winning film made by the Serbian director (and actor) Jelena Gavrilović.

Other sections at FeKK also presented a selections of movie trailers (done in cooperation with the Belgrade based MKC Kombinat), a retrospective of Slovenian short films done in collaboration with the Slovenian Film Centre, a series of best short films that were included in recent editions of the Motovun film festival, and films done under the okrilje of Luksuz Production. There was also a retrospective of young, promising authors and a children programme co-produced with Animateka International Animated Film Festival.

There is also the regular additional film festival programme with discussions and round tables. One of them was on the issues of international co-productions and was done together with the team of Creative Europe Desk Slovenia.
