Activities and projects
MoTA organises support actions for transitory art in the form of continuous events, exhibitions, and educational programmes both locally and internationally. Conceived through an open and collaborative approach of international curators and artists, enriched with in-depth research with a yearly focus, the programme takes place throughout the year in different partner cities in Europe and beyond.
Transitory network and the artist-in-residence programme
Since 2008 MoTA has been running the first ongoing artist-in-residence programme in Ljubljana for media, sound or visual artists, curators and researchers. So far MoTA has hosted and produced the work of more than 15 artists, among them Jorge Rodriguez Gerada, Felix Thorn, ArtKillArt, and Lexa Walsh. In 2009 MoTA hosted the new media artist and theoretician Nedine Kachornnamsong (Thailand/Sweden), who worked in Ljubljana in collaboration with Ljudmila - Ljubljana Digital Media Lab.
In 2010, MoTA established the Transitory Network of residencies in Eastern Europe. The Transitory Network is an open platform that aims to link different institutions with a similar mindset, that is: the dissemination of transitory art.
Sonica International Festival of Transitory Art
Sonica is a festival of transitory, sound, and experimental art, conceived as a showcase of the annual programme of the MoTA Museum of Transitory Art. It is an experimental festival, which questions ways of representation, exhibition formats, crossing borders between art and theory, object and performance. It evolves around a yearly theme ("Post" in 2009, "Real Virtuality" in 2010, "Transitions" in 2011).
CinemaScapes – series of live cinema events
Live cinema events entitled "CinemaScapes" have featured artists such as Plaid (UK), SOLU (FI), Olga Mink and Scanner, The Kilimanjaro Drakjazz Ensemble, Cronica Electronica, Mira Calix, Byetone, and many more. The series has primarily taken place Kinodvor Cinema, but has since moved to other locations across the city.
Workshops and education in the field of new media art
Following the practice of CodeEp, MoTA organises workshops for students and young professionals in the field of new media art. Each MoTA resident gives a workshop and/or presentation of his work. In 2010, MoTA launched the educational portal Artist Talk, an online platform for publishing and disseminating archives of artist talks across Europe.
Tomaž Brate Reading room and Mediatheque
In 2009, MoTA and Museum and Galleries of Ljubljana have opened a reading room and a mediatheque in the Jakopič Gallery, which consists of a vast collection of books belonging to Tomaž Brate as well as the MoTA book collection. The reading room serves also as the MoTA info point with information on resident artists, current, past and future projects, and archives.
