In 2009 the first Slovenia Press Photo Festival (SPP) took place in the National Gallery of Slovenia. In 2010 it moved to Cankarjev dom, Cultural and Congress Centre and the 2013 edition takes place in Museum of Architecture and Design. This competitive festival was established by the SPP Institute for Promotion of Photography in order to promote press and documentary photography in Slovenia.

With winners selected by an international jury, the national level competition concludes with an exhibition of the awarded works. It is accompanied by an overview exhibition of a renowned international press agency (in 2009 the Associated Press, in 2010 Sipa Press with the works by Göksin Sipahioglu, its founder, in 2011 the Agence France-Presse (AFP)), thematic exhibition (War VII by VII Photo Agency) or solo presentations (Paolo Pellegrin, Magnum Photos), lectures and courses.



Sections and awards

The festival awards the work (individual photographs or a story comprised of 3 to 10 photos) in the following sections: News, People, Sports, Entertainment & Culture, and Nature & Environment.

The international jury consisted of prominent experts: Christopher Morris, Adriana Zehbrauskas, Murad Sezer, Oded Balilty, and Heidi Levine in 2010, Emilio Morenatti, Antonin Kratochvil, Goran Tomašević, Patrick Witty, Christophe Simon in 2011, and Jerome Delay (AP Associated Press), Jerome Huffer (Paris Match), Louisa Gouliamaki (AFP), Maral Deghati (Warm, Me-Mo), Gali Tibbon (Canon) and Mathilde Boussion (6Mois) in 2015.

Luka Cjuha and Jaka Gasar (2009), Jure Eržen and Jošt Franko (2010) and Matic Zorman and Ciril Jazbec (2015) won the main prizes.


Venues and touring

In 2011 the exhibitions were set at the Palacij Hall of the Ljubljana Castle, at the Kresija Gallery and Magistrat Gallery, in 2015 at the Cankarjev dom and the Kresija Gallery

In 2009 the exhibition of the awarded works travelled also to the gallery in the Sevnica Castle, in 2010, however, the exhibition of 58 selected photographs took place in New York, Tel Aviv and Istanbul.
