It is one of 11 Slovene Urban Municipalities located in the north east of Slovenia. Ptuj is a member of the [[Slovene Association of Historic Towns]] as it traces its origins back to Roman Petovia and subsequently became a culturally rich medieval town. Ptuj is well-known for its annual traditional carnival, the [[Kurentovanje]]. Ptuj has been a member of Federation of European Carnival Cities since 1990. |

The Department of Non-commercial Public Services and Administrative Procedures is responsible for education, health and social care, youth and culture. It prepares development programmes, allocates funding, undertakes related governance tasks and co-operates with other agencies and with non-governmental organisations.

Much of Ptuj’s cultural heritage is preserved in Ptuj Regional Museum and its branches and in the state funded Historical Archives of Ptuj. The private Minorite St Petrus and Paulus Monastery Archives and Library, Ptuj is another important cultural institution in the town. tuj has 14 active cultural associations, which co-organise traditional annual events such as Katarina's Fair (November), Kurentovanje Masquerade (February), the Ptuj Festival of Folk Music (Summer), the Cultural Marathon (Summer), Ptuj Summer Nights (Summer) and numerous amateur theatrical and amateur choral meetings.
The local branches of the Union of Cultural Societies of Slovenia (ZKDS) and the Public Fund for Cultural Activities of the Republic of Slovenia (JSKD) facilitate the activities of local cultural organisations and act as mediators in respect of state and municipal funding.
