Slovenj Gradec is the only Slovene city to bear the name UN Messenger of Peace. Every year it marks United Nations Day with a series of events that turn the entire city into a showcase of peace under the title 'Let's Preserve Our Peace'. This event usually features exhibitions of paintings, photographs and literary works by children revolving around the theme of peace.
The Non-Economic Department is responsible also for support and supervision of cultural programmes in the municipality. The department is also in charge of cultural heritage preservation.
The Slovenj Gradec Union of Cultural Societies and the local unit of the Public Fund for Cultural Activities facilitate activities of numerous cultural associations.
