The company's client base reflects the diversity of its built and project experience, encompassing national and private arts bodies as well as multinationals. Its most acknowledged buildings include the building of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Slovenia (GZS) in Ljubljana, which received the Piranesi Award in 1999.
Other realised projects span from the the Central part of the National Gallery of Slovenia (2001) in Ljubljana, and Mercator Shopping Centre in Nova Gorica to recently completed projects, which include residential buildings - Condominium Trnovski Pristan and the Gradaška Apartment House - which contributed to high quality urban living on the edge of Ljubljana city centre. For the project Villa Beli Križ in Portotož the studio received the Golden Pencil Award in 2009, awarded by the Chamber of Architecture and Spatial Planning of Slovenia (ZAPS) to the most notable projects of the past year.
Among current projects are the Sports Park Stožice in Ljubljana, at the time one of the biggest construction sites in Slovenia, and Air Traffic Control Centre at the Airport Brnik.
Background
Jurij Sadar graduated from the Faculty of Architecture, University of Ljubljana in 1987 and subsequently worked there from 1993-1997 as Assistant Professor. His design for the Kotnikova apartment building won the Piranesi Award in 1992. Boštjan Vuga also graduated from the Faculty of Architecture in Ljubljana in 1982 and undertook postgraduate studies at the Architectural Association School of Architecture in London. He subsequently received the Student Plečnik Award in 1992. He is one of the founders of OCEAN, a trans-national network of architects, urban planners and designers.
Jurij Sadar and Boštjan Vuga are constantly holding lectures; they have staged many exhibitions as well. Several books and catalogues have been published. With the collection of their own realisations and of urban planning studies presented in “Formula New Ljubljana” the architects are now also intervening in the political process.
Philosophy
The studio is interested in architectural phenomena through experiences, emotions and atmosphere. They believe that the architectural product can influence its use, its visitors and its inhabitants providing new experience for new identification.
Formulas state concepts is the graphic outline of main ideas or characteristics, applied to SVA architectural products. They use them as the communicational tool in the office through the working process, in discussions with the client and presentations to the public. More than one project can be defined by one formula, and one project can also consist of several formulas for they exist regardless of typologies, program, location, site and any other parameters that bring out the features of the specific architectural product.
Awards
The studio has won a great deal of awards, of the greater importance are the Emerging Architect Special Mention at the competition for Mies Van Der Rohe Award in Barcelona, Spain, in 2007 for the project Faculty of Mathematics in Ljubljana; Marcus Prize for Architecture (Milwaukee, USA) in 2007 ; ECCS Steel Design Award in 2003 and 2001, and Bauwelt Prize granted in Berlin, Germany in 2001.
Sadar-Vuga Arhitekti were nominated for prestigious Mies Van Der Rohe Award in years 2001, 2003, and 2009, and for the Iakov Chernikhov International Prize (Moscow, Russia) in 2008. In 2008 the SVA studio was shortlisted at the World Architecture Festival taking place in Barcelona, Spain.
