Archival article

The Ljubljana String Quartet appears regularly at concerts at home and abroad, presenting music from various periods, primarily by Slovene composers. Several of its recordings (Hugo Wolf, Beethoven, Brahms) have been released on CD. The quartet also collaborates and records with other orchestras, for example on B. Martinu’s Concert for a Quartet and the Orchestra, which was published by Stradivari Records in the USA. The Ljubljana String Quartet received the Betetto Award in 1997. }}

History

The Ljubljana String Quartet was established in the 1950s. Its members have remained constant since 1983, and comprise Monika Skalar (violin, who is also a professor at the Academy of Music), Karel Žužek (violin), Franc Avsenek (viola), and Stane Demšar ('cello), all of whom are members of the RTV Slovenia Symphony Orchestra and Camerata Labacensis orchestra.

Repertoire, performances, and discography

With a repertoire including classical music works, some contemporary pieces, and works of Slovene composers, the Ljubljana String Quartet play frequently in some of Slovenia's best known festivals, such as Ljubljana Festival, upon which they performed with pianist Michel Bourdoncle in 2013, in celebration of the quartet's 30th anniversary.

The Ljubljana String Quartet also performed the Concerto for Quartet and Orchestra by Bohuslav Martinü in collaboration with the RTV Slovenia Symphony Orchestra. The recording of the concert was released in the USA by Stradivari Records.

Two of the quartet's CDs have been released by the RTV Slovenia record label. The first one is dedicated entirely to Hugo Wolf and was included in the BBC Radio 3 programme. The second CD features the quartets of Ludwig van Beethoven and Johannes Brahms. The quartet's studio recordings are sold by Slovene as well as international music publishers.

Awards

In 1997, the Ljubljana String Quartet won the Betetto Award, one of the most prestigious Slovene music awards.
