Founded in 1899, the Union of Slovene Fine Arts Associations is the oldest professional association of Slovene fine artists. During its long and distinguished history it was this organisation which took the initiative to establish the National Gallery of Slovenia, the Museum of Modern Art, the Academy of Fine Arts and Design, and several smaller galleries, as well as the fine art magazines Umetnost (1936), Sinteza (1961) and most recently Likovne besede Magazine [Art Words] (in print since 1985).

The Union engages in the conception and implementation of various exhibitions and artistic events at home and abroad, and in the creation and publication of artists' books and catalogues. Its secretariat monitors the regulation of legal acts concerning the status of visual artists in Slovenia and cooperates accordingly with the Ministry of Culture, which is also the main funder of the Union's programmes. It currently has 10 regional associations which represent approximately 650 individual members.

It organises the annual May Salon exhibition of its members' work and the Biennial of Slovene Book Illustration. It also bestows the Hinko Smrekar Award, the May Salon Award and the Rihard Jakopič Award.

The Union runs its own gallery, the Union of Slovene Fine Arts Associations (ZDSLU) Gallery, where it organises individual and smaller group exhibitions, presentations of graphic portfolios and various cycles.
