History

The international dance group En-Knap met for the first time in 1993 in Leuven, Belgium, under the wing of the production managing house Stuc and the Klapstuk Festival. There choreographer, dancer and film artist Iztok Kovač created the performance How I Caught a Falcon, which received awards from Time Out Magazine and at the Grand Prix International Video Dance in Stockholm. He subsequently moved back to Ljubljana and founded the En-Knap Dance Group and its own production house, En-Knap Productions, a non-for-profit cultural institution which has been based in Ljubljana since 1994. In 2007 a professional EnKnapGroup (EKG) was established - via an audition the five dancers were selected: two are coming from Slovenia, others from Slovakia, Turkey and the UK. They presented the first performance Celebration in November 2007. A formation of the further group of young dancers (18-20 y.o.) is in plan as soon as conditions are met.

Programme

The group's founder Iztok Kovač has choreographed a number of dance productions, as well as four films featuring over 100 artists from Europe, America and Asia. Well-known projects choreographed by Kovač include Spread Your Wings (You Clumsy Elephant) (Prešeren Foundation Award in 1994), Sting and String - First Touch (First Prize for Best Choreography at the Suzanne Dellal International Dance Competition 1996 in Tel Aviv), Codes of Cobra, Far From Sleeping Dogs, Emanatio Protei, The Perfect Step?, Hu Die, The Cast of Die and SKIN. Well known Slovene dancers started in the framework of En-Knap: Maja Delak, Mala Kline, Andreja Rauch, etc. In 2005 the Cankarjev dom hosted the En Knap production 'Mozart - Hype as I Wanna Be' by choreographer Iztok Kovač. The production featured international dancers Valeria Garre, Alexander Gottfarb, Carmen Larraz, Marc de Pablo, Snježana Premuš and Milan Tomašik. The music was written by composer Tomaž Grom.

The company has introduced and established its own aesthetics inside the European space and has attracted many acclaimed co-producers such as Hebbel-Theatre, Berlin, The Place, London, Kunstlerhaus Mousonturm, Frankfurt, Springdance Festival, Utrecht, Kunstencentrum Vooruit, Gent, Szene, Salzburg, TanzBremen, Bremen, Cankarjev dom, Ljubljana, Podewil/TanzWerkstatt, Berlin, Joint Adventures, Munich, Luzerntanz, Luzern and CNDC L´Esquisse, Angers. The production of the performance Codes of Cobra was EU funded within the Kaleidoscope programme of 1997. Since 1991 there have been over 400 reruns of En-Knap productions and films, presented on most better-known international dance stages and festivals, they have also received numerous international and domestic awards.

Projects

En-Knap member Maja Delak, who also choreographs her own performances (Gina & Miovanni, 6agon, Mezzanino) implemented an official secondary school-level programme with a specialisation in contemporary dance at the Pre-School Education and Grammar School, Ljubljana. In 2005 she also established non-governmental cultural institution Emanat, Dance Production and Education.

En-Knap also offers dance training, workshops and dance research for dancers and performers from Slovenia and abroad taught by En-Knap members, local dancers and choreographers and international guest instructors at their training hall. En-Knap Institute was the main organiser of the project CIMET-Cultural Intersections, Mobility, Education and Tradition, funded by Culture 2000 Programme. Two other En-Knap members, Andreja Rauch (Rebeka, 2002) and Mala Kline also teach there and have started creating works produced by Zavod En-Knap.

International cooperation

En-Knap is a member of the Informal European Theatre Meeting (IETM).
