Organised by Obalne galerije - Coastal Galleries the international conference Piran Days of Architecture has taken place annually since 1983 in November in the medieval coastal town of Piran. Its aim is to assess current trends in architecture and present the most progressive and innovative ideas of architectural and spatial production.

The event is held in the beautiful surroundings of Tartini Theatre, and traditionally accompanied by the International Architectural Exhibition of recent works by Central European architects. The distinguished Piranesi Award is granted for best achievements in architecture along with two Piranesi Mentions and a Student Piranesi Award.

Projects, created during last two years, are selected by national selectors. Each country (Austria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Slovakia and Slovenia) presents five projects. Part of the exhibition is the international student's Piranesi exhibition, presenting selected projects from eight different Faculties of Architecture (Ljubljana, Maribor, Graz, Vienna, Trst, Pescara, Zagreb, Split). The exhibition is presented at the Piran City Gallery. The international jury is composed of participating speakers of the conference.

Background

The Piran Days of Architecture is an important meeting of architects, students of architecture and amateurs from Central Europe. It presents significant contribution for promotion of Slovene architecture in the context of a broader European space, meanwhile offering a platform for effective cooperation of architects, economists and politicians, and the opportunity to exchange ideas and experiences. The Piran Days of Architecture were initiated by Slovene architect Vojteh Ravnikar (1943–2010); in 2008 the younger generation of architects took over the event. The members of organizing committee are Maja Ivanič (president), Anton Biloslav, Majda Božeglav–Japelj, Špela Kuhar, and Ana Struna Bregar.

Themes

Recent themes of the seminar have included Between the Rational and the Irrational in Architecture (2003), Architect and Society (2004), Architectural Policies (2005), Exhibited Architecture (2006), PDA – 25 years of architecture (2007), Architectural Diversity (2008), New Challenges (2009), and Reanimation of Architecture (2010).

Lectures

The conference presents one of the few international expert meetings of architects hosted by Slovenia, with renowned architects from Europe and other parts of the world giving lectures: Friedrich Achleitner, Boris Podrecca, Heinz Tesar, Luigi Semerani, Gino Valle, Eduardo Souto de Moura, Alvaro Siza Viera, Peter Zumthor, Enric Miralles, Sverre Fehn, Kenneth Frampton, David Chipperfield, among others.

The 28th conference in 2010 hosted Till Schneider – Schneider & Schumacher Architekten, Saša Begović – 3LHD, Klaas Goris – Coussée & Goris architecten, Jurij Kobe – Atelier arhitekti, Quintus Miller – Miller & Maranta, Victor Mestre – vmsa arquitectos, Paul O. Robinson – University of Florida, School of Architecture, Bijoy Jain – Studio Mumbai architects, and the president of the jury Bijoy Jain.

Lecturers at the 27th international architectural conference and jury for the 2009 Piranesi Award were Maruša Zorec – Arrea Architecture, Milton Braga – MVBB, Robert McCarter , Saša Randić – Randić&Turato, Wang Shu – Amateur Architecture Studio, John Wardle – John Wardle Architects, Aaron Tan – RAD, Shelley McNamara and Yvonne Farrell – GRAFTON, and Diébédo Francis Kéré – KERE Architecture.

Exhibitions

PDA conference is traditionally accompanied by several architectural exhibitions. The most important is the International Architectural Exhibition Piranesi of recent works by Central European architects which compete for distinguished international Piranesi Award. The 2010 exhibition was showcased in the warehouse Monfort in Portorož. The accompanied exhibitions included a photo exihition of Iwan Baan Brasili Chandigarh: Living with Modernity, an exibition of a workshop No-man's water by Hrvoje Njirić, and the exhibition Viktor Sulčič, 1895-1973, architect that was designed by an architect and professor Janez Koželj.

In 2009 the main exhibition took place in the Piran City Gallery and featured recent architectural achievements from Austria, Italy, Slovakia, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Croatia and Slovenia. Accompanying exhibitions have also taken place, including the display Houses of the World by Hiše Magazine, and Vertigo Bird Vertigo Light by Vertigo Bird.
