History
Founded in 1996, KIBLA Multimedia Centre is located in the building of the Narodni dom Maribor, but runs its own autonomous programme. KIBLA is organised as a non-profit association for culture and education, offering also free internet access, e-mail address and the web space for non-profit organisations and individuals.
Programme
KIBLA Multimedia Centre focuses on new (contemporary) educational, cultural and artistic praxis, connecting education and research, culture and technology, arts and sciences, emancipating and demystifying new media as a creative tool in education and new forms of art.
Since 1996 it has run the KiBela Art Space, where exhibitions, performances, concerts, theatre, lectures, symposia, fairs and workshops take place. The gallery collaborates with Slovene artists and institutions and also with contemporary artists and arts organisations in Graz, London, Zagreb, Belgrade and the USA, presenting new approaches through intermedia as well as classic fine arts. KIBLA runs several festivals, including the Izzven Jazz Festival, Maribor (November), the KIBLIX Linux IT Festival and the acclaimed 'Skrite note Festival('Hidden Music Score') programmes of avant-garde music. It also co-operates with numerous other organisations in Maribor, in Ljubljana (Ljubljana Jazz Festival, Druga Godba Festival) and abroad.
KIBLA is a founding member of the m3c Multimedia Centres Network of Slovenia. The http://www.dravoskop.si cultural portal was developed that features the latest creative happenings in the Podravje region and presents also cultural organisations in all municipalities.
Projects
In 2007 the city of Maribor - in close collaboration with the five other cities in neighbouring regions - Murska Sobota, Novo mesto, Ptuj, Slovenj Gradec and Velenje - was selected for nomination to the European Commission as a European Capital of Culture for 2012. A complex winning proposal - Čista energija ('Pure Energy') was prepared by KIBLA in co-operation with many collaborators and may be viewed at http://www.si2012.si.
International Co-operation
KIBLA is a member of many international networks and engages in numerous complex international projects, co-funded by EU (eg TRG-Transient Reality Generators, Travel in Europe and the Guild for Reality Integrators and Generators project).
Venues
Today the venue comprises KiBela Art Space, Za:misel Bookstore and KiBar cyber bar. KIBLA runs also a dislocated Information and Communication Point (KIT) at Glavni trg 14 in Maribor, which offers internet access, consulting and educational programmes regarding information and communications technology.
