The Ivan Rakovec Institute of Palaeontology was founded in 1949 and named after Ivan Rakovec (1899–1985), a Slovene geologist and palaeontologist. A part of the Scientific Research Centre (ZRC SAZU) at the Slovene Academy of Sciences and Arts (SAZU), the institute collects, conserves, studies, and interprets the rich fossil heritage of Slovenia.
