Inaugurated in 1998, the Festival at the Border is a rock music festival that takes place on the border between Austria and Slovenia, featuring both Austrian and Slovene groups and attracting audiences from both countries. It takes place in the small village Trate – which has a history of alternative culture dating back to the 1980s – in Cmurek Castle. On one side it overlooks the Austrian settlement Mureck and on the other the Slovene hillside.

Similarly, its organisers are the Slovene cultural association KUD Zid na meji and the Austrian Youth Club JUZHOUSE Mureck. The concept of the festival is to promote young and emerging rock bands, taking a special focus on those from the north-eastern part of Slovenia. As the festival is an international collaboration, musicians from Austria are more or less equally represented. Sometimes, bands from other neighbouring countries (Italy, Croatia) are also invited.


The festival had a unique reprise in autumn 2011, when its summer edition – featuring the whole line-up – was repeated on the stage of Gala hala in Ljubljana.
