[[Kino Udarnik Maribor]] is housed in a 1930s building which was originally designed as the elite Maribor city cinema hall. It represents the last old city cinema hall in which it is possible to project 35mm films with a screen ratio of 11m x 5m. The cinema was a member of the Artkino mreža, a network which distributed selected high-quality films around Slovenia, however it was closed for some years when it was one of the venues of the [[DokMa International Film Festival]]. In May [[established::2010]] Kino Udarnik was reopened as a regular cinema hall with a versatile programme and run by an enthusiastic team of the newly established NGO, Udarnik Maribor, a city art centre.

Kino Udarnik is a Maribor based cultural centre that brings together a regular (art) cinema hall with a club featuring music acts, lectures and exhibitions. Such a profile is being run since 2010, when Udarnik was re-opened after a few years hiatus. It is the last old city cinema hall still running and the only one where it is still possible to project 35mm films with a screen ratio of 11m x 5m. The place, run by an enthusiastic team of a small NGO, Udarnik has a versatile programme of both films and cultural events as well.

Background

Kino Udarnik was built in 1935 on the accord of a wealthy local family Gušti and was designed by the famed architect Vladimir Šubic. It was originally designed as the elite Maribor city cinema hall and was also a popular community centre, hosting even some sort of striptease evenings in the 1950s. In the late 90s, it started programming art films, became a member of Art Cinema Network and hosted, for example, the DokMa International Film Festival. In that same time Udarnik started to lose audiences due to the newly opened multiplexes on the outskirts and in 2008, it was brought to a halt.

Programme

After being reopened, Kino Udarnik once again started with a quality, art cinema oriented programme and is one of the rare venues in Slovenia, featuring experimental film, audiovisual and new media artworks. Regular screenings are organised in collaboration with the Slovenian Cinematheque titled as the Embassy of Cinematheque series. These screenings are usually followed by a discussion or artists talk (such as, pioneer of computer art Eduard Zajc in conversation with theoretician Melita Zajc) and co-organised with institutions such as SCCA-Ljubljana Centre for Contemporary Arts).

Udarnik features also the Maribor part of the Animateka International Animated Film Festival and hosts the Stoptrik International Film Festival, the international children and youth film festival Little elephant and – together with Vetrinjski dvor – a summer open-air cinema series and a children's festival Vilinsko mesto [The Elf City].

A rich multidisciplinary programme is being run alongside, with regular music concerts and DJ nights, film education workshops and occasional lectures. Udarnik also collaborates with many other NGOs from Maribor, like GT22, the son:DA Foundation and has featured strongly in the Maribor, European Capital of Culture 2012 programme. It also has a small shop with various artisan products and a bar.
