Background and mission
The idea for the Pixxelpoint Festival originated in an ICQ virtual chat between the festival's current technical director Blaž Erzetič and its director Pavla Jarc, who is also the director of the Nova Gorica Arts Centre and its Nova Gorica City Gallery.
The main ambition of Pixxelpoint is to achieve a lively interchange of the most recent and most important art production from the field of new media art, to break through onto the international scene.
The City Gallery Nova Gorica traditionally hosts the exhibition as the central event. Further locations such as TIR - Mostovna Gallery and some other spaces in the Italian part of the city of Gorizia occasionally give the podium for the lectures, workshops, evening meetings, a symposium on the given topic, and concerts by well-known music performers. The Internet as a "lasting" platform is also the venue for some projects.
Programme
Since 2003 themes of festivals have followed the concepts of the invited national guest curators; Jurij Krpan, Dunja Kukovec and Nataša Petrešin, Igor Španjol, Narvika Bovcon and Aleš Vaupotič. In 2008 and 2009 the Italian guest curator Domenico Quaranta held the reins of Pixxelpoint, with themes entitled For God's Sake! and Once Upon a Time in the West, respectively. The latter sought to revive dead media and obsolete technologies and retrieve and rekindle their aesthetics in order to "the exploration of the artistic potential of new media". Among artist projects from more than a dozen counties, the Slovene pioneer of net.art Vuk Ćosić and the collective BridA were also presented.
The 2010 edition was curated by Heiko Daxl and Ingeborg Fülepp along the theme Triple Conjunction: Magic, Myths and Mutations, while in 2011 the curators Gülsen Bal and BridA conceived the programme under the title Let's get ready!. The last two editions have been curated by Igor Štromajer.

Call for submissions
Each year the Pixxelpoint Festival sends out an international call for submissions based on the theme chosen by the festival curator. The majority of the projects presented on the festival are selected from the pool of applicants. The call is usually published in the early summer with the deadline at the end of September each year.
In 2008, 28 projects were chosen from the 113 submissions arriving from 32 countries. The jubilee edition received even greater attention, 138 projects were submitted, out of which 31 projects were presented on the 10th Pixxelpoint Festival.
International cooperation
Besides involving international curators, as a form of international cooperation Pixxelpoint has developed as an event of the transborder project, working with partners such as the DAMS University – the Gorizia department of the University of Udine and the Lucide Society, and several sponsors and media sponsors. Next to municipal and national funding the festival has also received support from the European Union and its Phare CBC Slovenia/Italy 2003 Programme.
